Portrait Louis Vierne

portrait Louis Vierne
oil on paper | title: Louis Vierne | Karin Merx 1999

Louis Vierne (1870 - 1937) was born nearly blind. At a very young age he showed an extraordinary talent for music. He was specially impressed by the sound of the organ. He studied organ at the Conservatory of Paris with César Franck and later on became pupil and assistant of Charles Widor.

Vierne composed numerous works for organ and other instruments. I became acquainted with his music via Christine Kamp who has recorded a lot of his music. This portrait gives an impression of the composer / organ player Louis Vierne who had quit a dark nature, likely because of his tragic life.
